African-American Community Calls For New Black... →
It’s a problem. 30 Rock has even brought it up. (Frank to Toofer: Are there other black nerds or is it just you and Urkel?)
See also: Examples section of Black and Nerdy on tv tropes. Moss from The IT Crowd is probably the strongest example of modern-day Urkelism.

Kevin Smith’s new film looks violent and boring.
Trivia: Samuel L. Jackson was considered for the role that eventually went to John Goodman. Pity, that might have saved it.
Whatever you are, be a good one.

At $36 This could be this year’s cheapskate version of the Brookstone quadricopter. I have ordered one. Videos.
From The Upper Deck →
A photoblog of photos taken from the top deck of a double-decker bus with a 50mm lens. I like the perspective, it straddles the line between surveillance and intimate, with a bit of vouyerism. Grade-separated street photography—brilliant.

Midnight Surfing
I can’t sleep, so I’ve been crawling this list of bizarre Wikipedia articles.

Report: Crossair SB20 at Werneuchen on Jul 10th... →
I love reading about airplane disasters. The Aviation Herald is the definitive source for aviation incident reporting.
In this account, a plane encounters bad weather and makes several missed approaches and tries several alternate airports. Finally it is declared an emergency due to low fuel and is diverted to a “special airfield.” There is no ATC crew onsite. Someone manages to call...

Portland Cello Project
I am seeing these guys tonight at the Triple Door. I have no expectations, other than than I like the sound of cello music. Their bio is pretty ballsy:
In the course of one of PCP’s epic 2-3 hour shows – (the format of which is always a one-time affair – the group writes almost entirely new arrangements for every performance cycle) – you’ll see such sights as: old ladies, straight out of the...

Seinfeld Trivia
Listening to the Kevin Pollak Chat Show podcast, Episode 86. Jason Alexander is the guest, and he reveals some fun Seinfeld trivia:
George’s father Frank Costanza was played by two other actors before Jerry Stiller appeared (~1:15:00):
You know he’s the third guy to play my dad. The first guy, I can’t even remember the first guy, I’m sorry to say. … And then they...

Instant translation app for the iPhone. Great for travelers, not so great for someone learning the language (cheating too often is bad). In any case, the wow factor is, like, off the chart. Star Trek Universal Translator here we come?

Comedy Podcasts
I’m late to the party but grateful that League Brother Dan introduced me to the Nerdist Podcast. Through that I discovered the Kevin Pollak Chat Show. I quite enjoy hearing comedians geek out and talk about their influences. Hurray for wit!
PS: The KPCS has a running gag where guests are invited to do a bad Larry King impression and throw to a city at the end. Archives here.
